Move Over Botox, I’m Sticking These Needles in My Face Instead.

Move Over Botox, I’m Sticking These Needles in My Face Instead.

In the search for a more natural and less-expensive way to get healthy radiant skin - and combat the signs of aging - without the botox (or a #filter), I recently came across facial acupuncture.

Seriously, hear me out…

Having fine-needles inserted into your dermis (the superficial layer of the skin) creates ‘micro-traumas’, except it’s the good kind of trauma - increasing collagen & elastin production, relaxing muscle tone, increasing circulation oxygenating the skin - and more.

No funky fillers here, just teeny-tiny needles which are placed into the skin as part of a TCM cosmetic treatment - and it’s less painful (actually not all at) and more enjoyable than you might think. I recently treated myself to a session at Kriss Grcic’s Traditional Today clinic and it included not only a facial treatment, but also a full consultation so that my skin concerns would be treated holistically - setting me up for real long-term success from the inside out!

“I love making people feel good about themselves and bringing out their natural beauty.  In addition to getting a facial treatment, all clients still get an in-depth intake and supportive acupuncture body points.” - Kriss

Benefits of Cosmetic Acupuncture

  • Relaxed muscle tone
  • Increased circulation oxygenating the skin
  • Increased collagen & elastin production
  • Tightened and eyes are brightened
  • Nourished skin giving you a healthy complexion

But wait...for how long, and for how many sessions do you need in order to get real, noticeable results?

Kriss advises that frequency can depend on age, sun exposure, lifestyle and simple genetics. With that said, her general recommendations for women in their 20’s or early 30’s is a base of 5 sessions. Of course, if you’re looking for more than just prevention and are in your late 30s or 40s onwards, you might look at more base sessions and some bi-weekly treatments for a short period of time.

“Depending on the base of sessions you do I would say results last 6-12 months...but there is always prevention happening! Maintenance varies - some come monthly, but I also suggest doing ‘clusters’, i.e. 2-3 treatments weekly every 2-4 months for optimal results.”

Personally, I loved the experience start to finish (and I’m not good with needles!), noticed immediately softer and more glowy, dewy skin, and am looking forward to more treatments specifically for post-acne scarring.

“Facial acupuncture and even some micro-needle rollers can all help with post acne scarring.  The older the scar or more pitted the harder it will be, but by breaking down the scar tissue while increasing collagen production can help soften the appearance.”

It’s official: there’s nothing TCM can’t do. I love it when I find natural, ancient ways to be beautiful and boujee.

As a Registered Chinese Medical practitioner and acupuncturist with over 10 years experience in downtown Toronto and Upper Beaches, Kriss delivers compassionate and skilled care to her clients. Her goal is to promote living and healing, traditionally – today.

  • Is there any downtime after this treatment? If so what’s the average recovery time?
