Leading up to the holidays, we are accosted with various forms of media telling us ‘tis the season for giving” and indeed, it is! We are all for making our loved ones feel important with gifts and entertaining. If there is a seasonal opportunity to give back to your community or charity of your choosing, we support that too. All that said, it is also the season for YOU to indulge, feel luxurious and give back to yourself. A bit of self-care and retail therapy is sometimes just the ticket to keep you going through the holidays so you can continue to make it a special time for those around you!
There is often a lot of guilt attached to acts of self-care but we’re here to remind you that a) it’s possible to indulge yourself in ways that are mindful and sustainable and b) ultimately those around you benefit when you’re the best version of yourself.
Here are 3 simple ways to give back to yourself and feel luxurious over the holidays…
#1 Make time to take a fitness class of your choosing
“Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands, they just don't.” - Elle Woods, Legally Blonde. The movie reference may cue an eye roll or two but it doesn’t make it any less true! Putting fitness, weight loss and vanity aside, exercising makes you feel good. Period. You will feel happier, have more energy and spread good vibes to those around you when you take an hour to go to a fitness class. These days it’s inexpensive, doesn’t involve buying a full membership and you benefit emotionally from the camaraderie of working out with others. Plus, you’re supporting a local business - win, win!
#2 Enjoy Some Guilt-Free Feasts
Food always seems to be a big concern during the holidays. We’re worried about overeating, making unhealthy choices and also waste! Instead of torturing yourself over whether or not to have that extra helping of stuffing or a slice of cake, just have it. As long as it’s not a daily routine, its ok to have a rich and indulgent meal once in a while! There’s a lot to be said for the emotional benefits of sharing a special meal with friends and family. If you’re the one hosting, try to use locally sourced ingredients to support your local farmers and businesses and lastly, have a plan for leftovers. If you don’t think you will eat or re-purpose the leftovers, buy some recyclable containers to pack them up for your guests or take them to a local shelter.
#3 Embrace Retail Therapy
We’re not suggesting you go on a mad spree for yourself but chances are you’re going to need at least one new outfit for an office party or family gathering! Nothing feels better than slipping into a new dress for the first time and you can feel good about it too when it’s a mindful purchase. By purchasing pieces from a Canadian brand (like Viertola Studios) you can feel good about that fact that your new clothes were ethically made both socially and environmentally. Not only that, your purchase supports several local businesses involved in bringing that piece to market, not just the designer!
So this season, when you’re starting to feel a touch overwhelmed, take a minute to embrace a little guilt-free self care and see how those around you benefit from it too!
